Gabriel’s Oboe was written by Ennio Morricone (1863 - 1937) as the main theme for the movie “The Mission.” The protagonist plays the tune in order to befriend an indigenous tribe. This tribe was unhappy with the performance and broke the oboe.
As a tune, Gabriel’s oboe has become renowned as a representation for the oboe’s sound and many interpretations of the tune have surfaced on oboe and violin especially. Morricone has conducted several orchestras on this piece. Interestingly, the tune takes inspiration from the baroque period.
