Trains at University 大學 - Hong Kong MTR [4k]

In this video we visit University, a station on MTR's East Rail Line situated adjacent to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in Ma Liu Shui. Here we do some trainspotting where we see some Hyndai Rotem EMU's (R-Trains) arriving and departing the station.

University is unique as it has the sharpest curves of any station on the MTR train network, which saw the station retrofitted over the years with special features such as signage and flashing LED lights to warn passengers about the gap between the train and the platform, and extra platform staff on duty to ensure the safe boarding and alighting of passengers.

Because of the curves University station was among the last stations on the MTR train network not to feature any platform screen doors due to the difficulties in having them retrofitted. However in 2023 MTR began the process of retrofitting platform screen doors to all East Rail Line stations by 2025, with University being one of the last to receive them. At the time of filming this video only the rear four carriages on platform 1 had been retrofitted, but at the time of uploading this video in March 2025 the installation of platform screen doors on platform 1 is now complete.

The East Rail Line opened on the 1st October 1910 as the Kowloon–Canton Railway and was the first heavy railway line constructed in Hong Kong. University station was built as an infill station, having opened on the 24th September 1956 as Ma Liu Shui. The Chinese University of Hong Kong established its campus at Ma Liu Shui in 1963, which saw the station renamed to University on the 1st October 1967. The station has been modernised and expanded over the years, including in the 1980's when the line was modernised and electrified, and in 2000 when the concourse was significantly expanded.
