Why Everyone In This Village Had Their Kidneys Stolen

Chennai, a small town in southern India, known locally as Kidneyvakkam—‘Kidneyville’ where nearly every adult resident has sold their kidney. But what’s even crazier is that it’s not just Chennai that has this nickname. Manila, Philippines. Hokse, Nepal. Herat, Afghanistan. Lahore, Pakistan. Bangladesh. Myanmar. Costa Rica.

Scattered across the globe, hidden in plain sight, there are entire communities who depend on selling their kidneys and other organs to survive. Isn’t this illegal? And if it is–how does it seem to be thriving in plain sight?
