This is a march for marching band, symphonic band, or wind ensemble. The Earl of Glasgow was one of the instrumental historical figures in the unification of England and Scotland to form Great Britain.
The march was composed with a Scottish feel to it. In that respect, it follows British marching band music styles as follows: It has a relatively slow tempo of 112. It has counter melodies in the second time through the second strain, and the third time through the trio (last strain). It has a wide range of dynamics. To give the trio the appropriate lyrical quality, I adapted the melody of the old Scots language song, "A Red, Red Rose", re-harmonizing and altering it in my march as I saw fit. The melody used for ARRR is the same as the 1821 song, "Low Down in the Broom". On the third time through, the trio modulates back to the starting key in order to put the melody in a brighter key for the trumpets.
