The Tree-Dwelling Kemu Tribe

Deep in the Southeast Asian rainforest live the Kemu people, also known as the "Bird People." Their way of life is unlike anything you've seen before: the men live in treehouses all their lives, descending only when the women of the tribe summon them.

In this matrilineal society, women hold all the power. When a woman chooses a husband, she builds him a wooden hut in the trees. The men live and sleep there, only coming down when tapped by bamboo poles—a signal to fulfill marital duties or assist in childbirth.

Despite their unique customs, the Kemu people face challenges due to a severe gender imbalance. At one point, a community of 3,000 had only seven men, threatening the tribe's survival.

This remarkable way of life offers a rare glimpse into human diversity and resilience.
