Hail forms within thunderstorms when strong updrafts carry raindrops high into the atmosphere, where they freeze.

These frozen droplets then collide with other water droplets, causing them to freeze and grow larger.

When the hailstones become too heavy for the updraft to support, they fall to the ground.
