Melancolico Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla. Performed by "Cuatro Con Pasion" & Maggie Ferguson (bandoneon) www.maggiefergusontango.com/
This tango represents Piazzolla's departure from the dance music of the golden era. The tango appears to describe the frenetic but mesmerizing intensity of the city of Buenos Aires. A steady rhythmic figure from the bandoneon and piano underscore a dark violin theme, sadness and beauty alternating with driving percussive brashness and spikey marcato. The unearthly violin solo seems to describe a miniature of a tanguero's life with beginning middle and conclusion all in 23 bars. It is followed by a return of the second refrain now embellished by the bandoneon with percussive interjections by the violins, which gradually dies out as the city goes to sleep. Arranged by Astor Piazzolla for his string orchestra. Transcription Andres Linetzky. Courtesy of TangoVia, www.tangovia.org
Filmed live on 29 November 2013 at Verbrugghen Hall, Conservatorium of Music, Sydney.
