FM like Superluminal with the Virus // 50 Shades of FM Ep51 #shorts

Hello internet, In this very first artist special episode of "50 Shades of FM," I'll teach you how to create an FM lead like "Superluminal" by Kabayun and Yasmin on the Virus.

After listening to a lot of their music, I've realized that what makes their FM sound special is the way they program and modulate it. The sound itself is pretty straightforward; I found that FMing wave5 on oscillator two from the Virus, while being synced to the first oscillator which is one octave lower than oscillator two, gets us really close to the timbre we're looking for. Filtering-wise, I used only filter one as a bandpass 24db/oct (Serial 6) with some resonance.

But the magic happens when we turn on the arpeggiator, set it to a basic 1/16 division, set the synthesizer to Mono, and then play only one note while modulating the release of the amp envelope and the filter cutoff at the same time.
