"The Secret Number" | Miguel Abuel | IFMC

"The Secret Number" By Colin Levy

This is one of my submissions for the Indie Film Music Contest! To get started I had to watch the whole short film to get the context. I think it's quite hard for me to score something without knowing what the story/characters and plot are. And when I did finish watching the whole thing (without the original score) I felt that it was a "Black mirror" styled thriller in terms of vibe and ambience. The tension of not understanding this secret number was such an interesting concept that I wanted to utilize the confusion these characters felt in the music.

I stuck to using synths and ambient textures to immediately give the idea that there won't be too many familiar sounds except for the main motif. (I am an advocate for less is more.)

The main motif is the melodic sliding major 3rd strings that play at strategic parts of the film. This is meant to describe the feeling of utter confusion. This plays at major beats of this film until the very last reveal showing the professor. Then this motif acts as some kind of answer to this confusion.

The rest of the score is there to mostly support these feelings. Slowly building up tension to then release it when a location changes or when something is answered.

All in all, I really enjoyed this film because it played into my strengths when it comes to composing music! Thanks for reading!
