Scene 1:
INT. CLOCKMAKER'S WORKSHOP - DAY
Dust motes dance in the single shaft of sunlight piercing the gloom of Arlo's workshop. Gears, springs, and broken clock faces litter his workbench. Arlo, hunched over a delicate mechanism, meticulously winds a tiny key. He wears a grimace of frustration.
ARLO
(Muttering)
Still no life. Just ticking. Ticking like a dying ember.
He slams the mechanism down, the sound echoing through the silent workshop. A collection of antique clocks, frozen in time, stare down from the shelves. Arlo runs a hand through his thinning grey hair, a wave of despair washing over him.
ARLO
(To himself)
What's the point? All this… ticking… for what?
He glances at a faded photograph on his workbench – a young woman with a radiant smile, her hand resting on his shoulder. A pang of grief shoots through him.
ARLO
(Whispering)
Clara…
He picks up a small, intricately carved wooden box. Inside, nestled on a bed of velvet, lies a delicate clockwork bird. It twitches, its mechanical wings fluttering, but never takes flight.
ARLO
(Sighing)
Just… ticking. That's all we ever do. Ticking towards… what?
Scene 2:
EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
Eliza, a young woman with bright eyes and a backpack, stumbles upon the town square. The clock tower, its hands frozen at ten past three, looms over the deserted square. Weeds sprout from the cobblestones.
ELIZA
(To herself)
This place… it feels like time forgot it.
She notices Arlo's workshop, its windows grimy and obscured. Curiosity piqued, she heads towards it.
Scene 3:
INT. CLOCKMAKER'S WORKSHOP - DAY
Eliza knocks tentatively on the workshop door. After a long pause, it creaks open. Arlo, startled, eyes her with suspicion.
ARLO
Yes? What is it?
ELIZA
Hello! I'm Eliza. I just moved to town, and I noticed the clock tower… it seems to be… broken.
ARLO
(Scoffs)
Broken? It's not broken. It's… stopped. Like everything else in this town.
ELIZA
Oh. I… I love clocks. I used to help my grandfather repair them. Maybe I could…
ARLO
(Interrupting)
No. I don't need your help.
He slams the door in her face, leaving Eliza bewildered.
Scene 4:
INT. CLOCKMAKER'S WORKSHOP - NIGHT
Arlo, unable to sleep, returns to his workshop. He notices a strange glint in the corner, hidden beneath a pile of discarded clock parts. He brushes away the debris and discovers a tarnished metal box.
Intrigued, he unlocks it. Inside, nestled on a bed of silk, lies an extraordinary sight: an automaton. It is a lifelike figure of a young woman, her skin crafted from porcelain, her eyes crafted from amethyst.
ARLO
(Whispering)
What… what is this?
He carefully examines the automaton. It is a masterpiece of clockwork engineering, with intricate gears and delicate mechanisms visible beneath its porcelain skin. He winds a key hidden beneath her dress.
The automaton stirs. Her eyes flutter open, revealing a startlingly human gaze.
AUTOMATON
(Softly)
Where… am I?
Arlo recoils, dropping the key. The automaton sits up, her movements surprisingly fluid and graceful.
ARLO
(Stuttering)
You… you're…
AUTOMATON
(Looking around)
I… I don't understand. I feel… sensations. Emotions.
ARLO
(Shaking his head)
Impossible. You're a machine. A clockwork… thing.
AUTOMATON
But I… I feel…
She reaches out a hand, her touch surprisingly warm. Arlo, mesmerized, gently grasps her fingers.
Scene 5:
INT. CLOCKMAKER'S WORKSHOP - DAY
Over the next few days, Arlo spends his time with the automaton. He names her Anya.
