Tony Northrup reviews the new Sony a1 II and compares it to the original Sony a1. Honestly, it's an incremental upgrade. The sensor is the same, and the video capabilities haven't significantly changed: it's still limited to 8k/60.

However, it has some big improvements. The subject detection is much smarter, thanks to Sony's AI chip. Now, it can track the body of people or animals even when the head or eyes are visible.

It also adds pre-capture, so it can record photos from a full second before you pressed the shutter - finally catching the Sony a1 II up to competitors like the Canon R5 II, Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z9.

The electronic viewfinder is the same as the previous model, but now the viewfinder stays sharp even when you're shooting.

The sensor stabilization wasn't as good as we hoped, but it is a little improved. When using non-stabilized lenses, it's about a stop better than the Sony a1.
