India’s Gene-Edited Sheep T1: A New Era in Animal Science Begins

India has just made history by developing its first gene-edited sheep, and it’s called T1! Created at Sher-e-Kashmir Agricultural University using cutting-edge CRISPR-Cas9 technology, this sheep is no ordinary animal. Scientists edited the myostatin gene—something found in the European Texel breed but missing in Indian sheep—to increase T1’s muscle mass by a remarkable 30%. That’s a big leap forward in livestock science!

So, what does this mean for farmers and consumers? With improved muscle development, T1 is expected to produce better quality meat and wool, offering a potential economic boost for livestock farmers across the country. What’s more, T1 doesn’t contain any foreign DNA, which makes it not only safe but also more acceptable for widespread use. It’s a huge step forward for sustainable and science-backed animal husbandry in India.

Of course, not everyone sees it the same way—some believe gene editing is a form of tampering with nature. In this video, we break down what T1 really is, how CRISPR technology works, and what it means for the future of biotechnology in India. This project, backed by ICAR and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), could reshape the way we think about farming and food production. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more updates on innovations shaping our world!
