The Witham Shield is one of the most spectacular artefacts from Iron Age Europe. Dating to the 4th century BC, the shield was discovered in the River Witham in Lincolnshire, England in 1826. The bronze work is exquisite.
Originally it would have had a wooden backing, as the bronze sheet is very thin. The raised decorations are beautifully decorated in the La Tene style of Celtic artwork.
