Canada, a multicultural immigrant nation today, was predominantly Christian in the 19th century, reflecting a vastly different society. Christmas poems of the era, rich in religious themes, conveyed joy and blessings while bearing witness to Canada’s Christian heritage. This playlist includes “A Christmas Star” by Elisabeth Roberts MacDonald, “The Christmas Night” by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and “Christmas Night” by William Inglis Morse. Written during World War I, “A Christmas Star” questions the meaning and value of Christmas songs for those scattered far from home—an answer lies within its verses. To echo this spirit, I’ve included “Christmas Carol” and “Christmas Song”, sharing what Christmas signifies to me. No matter your faith, may hope bring you peace and serenity tonight!
