The Mysterious Amber Sun Cross #history #archaeology

This beautiful ancient artefact is over three thousand years old. Dating to about 1200 BC, it comes from Nordic Bronze Age Denmark. The bronze frame surrounds an amber sun disc in the centre. The amber has a perforations, forming a dark sun cross. This ancient symbol representing the sun, is found right across Bronze Age Europe for over a thousand years.
This is a unique artefact and its exact function is unknown. But the lowest part of the bronze handle would have been inserted into a socket of some kind and, from what we know of the period, it was probably used during rites related to the bronze age solar cult.
