The Hindenburg disaster occurred on May 6, 1937, when the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during an attempted landing at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. Of the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crew), there were 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crew). One worker on shore also died, for a total of 36 fatalities.

The disaster was widely covered in shocking videos, photographs and a radio report recorded by Herbert Morrison, a witness to the disaster, which was rebroadcast the following day. A variety of hypotheses have been proposed for both the cause of ignition and the fuel that caused the fire to spread. The incident shattered public confidence in the safety of rigid passenger airships and marked the sudden end of the Airship era.
