A Derry Air (Danny Boy)
One of the most beautiful melodies ever written. First published in 1855 in George Petrie's collection „The Ancient Music Of Ireland“. The tune was given to Petrie by Jane Ross of Limavady, co. Derry. Miss Ross didn't know the title, so Petrie published it as „Londonderry Air“. Apart from „Danny Boy“, from the lyrics written by Frederic Edward Weatherly in 1910, that's the title most commonly used today.
According to Petrie and Miss Ross the Derry Air is „very old“. Some sources attribute it to blind harper Ruaidhrí Dall Ó Catháin, some state its similarities to „Aisling an Óigfhir“ from Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh's repertoire. Both notions seem very charming to me and I hope that it shows in my arrangement as well as my love and joyful respect for this masterpiece of a melody.
