This is a scene from one of my favorite Japanese festivals: 祇園まつり(Gion Matsuri),
which takes place every year in July in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture. (Not Kyoto!) The name is a reference to Buddhist scripture, also the source of Kyoto’s famous “geisha” district’s name. At the heart of Matsusaka’s Gion Matsuri are 1. “Mikoshi” shrine-carrying processions and 2. taiko drumming. Both of which enjoy active community participation, which is of course what makes Japanese festivals so awesome. I made a video on the (general) topic a few years back.
