In this video we visit Newcastle Interchange, the main railway station in the city of Newcastle in New South Wales. It opened on the 15th October 2017 as part of the controversial project that saw the Newcastle Railway Line truncated to revitalise the centre of Newcastle. It was built across the road of the old Wickham station and replaced the original Newcastle Station as the main railway station for the city. Newcastle Interchange serves as the terminus of the Central Coast & Newcastle Line and the Hunter Line operated by Sydney Trains. It's also served by the Newcastle Light Rail.
We visit the station during the morning peak for the Central Coast & Newcastle Line, which here is between 5am - 6:40am as this time sees the most morning departures towards Sydney. Here we see all three types of electric rollingstock used by Sydney Trains on Intercity services; ranging from the V Sets (the oldest electric train in Australia having first entered service in 1970) to their modern replacements; the brand new Mariyung's (D Sets), plus some Oscar's. On the Hunter Line we see some Hunter Railcar's. We also take a quick tour inside each train where I give my thoughts on each.
The aim of this video was to film as many V Sets as possible. With the Mariyung's now entering service after many years of delays the V Sets are now in the process of being retired. The current rumor mill is that the V Sets will be withdrawn from the Central Coast & Newcastle Line in the coming months (possibly as soon as July!), so get these trains while you can!
