ESL Program Overview

ESL Program Overview
The ESL Program and Bilingual/Bicultural Program at UW-Whitewater are two related programs in the same field. You may think of it as one tree with two branches. This video addresses the ESL program specifically, and the next video addresses the Bilingual/Bicultural Program.

The ESL program at UWW-Whitewater is a “licensable minor” program, which means that it is a minor that students can add to their education-related majors. It also means that for those students whose majors result in a PK-12 teaching license (for example, Early Childhood, Elementary Ed/MCEA, Secondary Education, Special Education, and World Language Education), students can add the ESL minor and receive an ESL license. The age level of the ESL license will match the age level of the student’s major license. For example, if a student majoring in MCEA has an ESL minor, the ESL license will match the age/ developmental range addressed by the MCEA license.

For those students whose major is a non-teaching major (social work, sociology, etc.,) and who would like to minor in ESL for adults, this is also an option. This minor is similar to the traditional ESL minor, but is tailored to the student’s major and interests, and does not result in an ESL teaching license.

Please note that one does not need to be proficient in a language other than English to get the ESL license.

Please see the ESL/Bilingual program website for more information.
