This Tune Up drill is all about getting on and off points.
An untrained retriever once landing on a point, with the next cast will have a natural tendency, to roll around the point on land and out of sight.
The key message in this drill is to immediately get in the water with the cast on the point.
This drill also teaches your retriever your "permission cast" to get on point, if he is trying to be a "good dog" and swim by the point.
Once your retriever has mastered this tune up after several successive days,
you should make it even more challenging by scenting each point with duck scent. A scented point can be a difficult blind in a hunt test because most
retrievers have been conditioned to swim, swim, swim, beach on land, then
smell the planted blind, and pick up that reward.
Also since distance erodes control, an untrained retriever typically goes into "hunt mode" on a scented point and the handler may loose control.
First teach and thoroughly master the concept of getting on and off points, only then should you increase the challenge by scenting each point with duck scent.
