The show beavis and butthead would premiere in march of 1993 on MTV. It would be one of network’s most memorable shows and it was an instant success garnering huge ratings, despite initially receiving mixed reviews. it soon became the network’s most popular show. but along with that popularity came a lot of controversy. In the show’s first seven months of airing there were dangerous stunts carried by kids across America with critics claiming the show inspired these incidents. While some episodes would end up being censored or removed from reruns until later years, there would be one episode that was deemed so controversial, that the media and critics blasted MTV and the show’s creator mike judge for being responsible for the death of a 2 year old. It would turn out that the whole story was fake..

The show would be centered around two characters, Beavis and Butthead who ware a pair of slacker teenagers, who share a love of hard rock and heavy metal and get themselves involved in trouble whether it be playing with fire, getting involved in violence or vandalism. Of course, given the content of the show, family values types and watch dog groups would claim that Beavis and Butthead was deliberetly marketed to children. But MTV would claim their research showed that 9/10 people watching the show were over the age of 12.
One of my the show’s biggest critics would be a guy named Dick Zimmerman who won $10 million from the lottery in 1988 and used his earnings to speak out against TV violence and even setup a hotline for concerned parents to call. He would tell the LA times “I was channel surfing and came upon ‘Beavis and Butt-head,’ an episode called ‘Home Improvement,’ ” he recalls. “They were chatting with one another in their usual charming style, and one says, ‘Let’s go get Stuart’s cat and light one in his butt.’ The other says, ‘I’m all out of M-80s, but I’d like to burn something.’
He would go on to reveal he read a story a few days later claiming someone in Santa Cruz did the exact same thing to their cat.
Beavis and Butthead also soon landed on the radar of Terry Rakolta, whose name might sound familiar if you were a fan of married with children as in 1989 she tried to get the show pulled off the air.
It would be the first episode of the third season titled ‘Comedians’ which aired on September 6, 1993 that garnered one of the biggest controversies in the show’s history. . The episode sees Beavis and Butt-Head watching tv when they see a commercial for a documentary about a comic (Andrew Dice Clay) whose had a successful career. Inspired by what they see, Beavis Butthead wants to go to a local comedy club and do s some standup. Both characters don’t get the reaction they had hoped for but they would be inspired by an earlier act they saw that juggled fire, Beavis tries to juggle burning newspapers, but it results in him burning down the club. As the club comes down in flames the pair make remarks about how cool and funny they are. Seems harmless right?
Fast forward to October 6, 1993 in Moraine, Ohio where a five year old kid name Austin Messner set his mother’s mobile home on fire with a cigarette lighter in the early hours of the morning. The fire, sadly killed his two year old sister Jessica. Austin’s mother, Darcy Burk in a profile by the new york post would admit she was sometimes working 12 hour days, 7 days a week so she had to have a babysitter care for her children. Darcy would tell the Post “The fire chief asked Austin where he learned to play with fire and he said beavis and butthead. The girl that i had babysitting was allwing the kids to watch it. Austin would go around laughing like Beavis and butthead - since the fire hasn’t done that.’ In the run up to the fire Darcy claimed she noticed her matches missing she became so concerned with her son’s behavior she removed his bedroom door so she could keep a better eye on him. Of course, the national news was all over the story and Beavis and Butthead and MTV were now getting hte type of attention they didn’t want. Darcy even appeared on oprah.
