Spain is taking a major leap forward in modernizing its pilot training fleet by partnering with Airbus and Turkish Aerospace to develop and acquire the advanced Hurjet jet trainer.

This collaboration aims to replace the aging Northrop F-5M aircraft used by the Spanish Air and Space Force, marking a significant milestone in European and Turkish aerospace cooperation.

The Hurjet: Next-Generation Jet Trainer

The Hurjet is a twin-seat, single-engine supersonic jet trainer that doubles as a light attack aircraft. First flown on April 25, 2023, the aircraft combines cutting-edge technology with advanced training capabilities.

Currently, a full-scale model painted in a low-visibility grey livery has been unveiled, though the aircraft remains disassembled without wings and stabilizers as it progresses through development.

Why Spain Needs the Hurjet

Spain’s Ala 23 squadron currently operates 19 F-5Ms, which serve as the backbone for pilot training during the Fighter and Attack Phase before pilots advance to frontline fighters like the Eurofighter Typhoon and F-18 Hornet.

With the F-5Ms nearing retirement, Spain plans to acquire 28 to 30 new aircraft at a budget of approximately €275 million ($310 million) to maintain and enhance pilot readiness.

Airbus and Turkish Aerospace Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Leading the Spanish aerospace industry, Airbus has joined forces with Turkish Aerospace by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the Hurjet Advanced Jet Trainer Aircraft and the Integrated Training System – Combat (ITS-C) program.

This partnership will combine Airbus’s expertise in design, manufacturing, in-service support, and training with Turkish Aerospace’s innovative Hurjet platform.

Broader Implications and Strategic Cooperation

The Hurjet is also destined to replace Turkey’s Northrop T-38 fleet, with deliveries starting in 2026. Reports suggest Spain’s potential procurement of the Hurjet may be tied to a transfer of six Airbus A400M transport aircraft, originally contracted by Spain but possibly reassigned to Turkey, enhancing bilateral defense cooperation.
