They traveled from island to island using no instruments—only the stars, ocean swells, wind, birds, and the sun. This golden age of voyaging suddenly stopped around 1300 CE. For nearly a thousand years, Polynesians stayed on their islands. Historians still debate why.

Moana’s story mirrors this real pause—and the bold return to the sea. She represents a new generation remembering what was lost, reclaiming their identity as wayfinders, and embracing the call of the ocean.

Her journey is inspired by figures from Polynesian myth, especially Māui, the demigod who fished islands from the sea and slowed the sun. Their adventure in the movie captures both the mythic power and cultural truth of her people.
