They’re not hated, never were, absolutely loved by many now
For my money, Let Her Cry is the best example of Darius's vocal talent. Beautiful song.
I met Rucker back in 98 when he was performing for the troops as I was in the Marines. He performed at a small bar on base in Okinawa, Japan. He sat around with us afterward and had some beers with us.. What a cool dude.
they definitely helped put a much needed smile on our grungy burnt out teenage faces, that we didn't know was much needed. thanks Hootie and the Blowfish!!
Here in The UK, whenever I mention Hootie, the response I get is almost invariably "Never heard of them". I guess I got lucky in some ways, back in 1995 there was a late night radio show here that would play a lot of new music by artists that were up and coming and not in the mainstream gaze. My brother had recorded it one night and handed me the tape the next day, thinking I'd like a lot of what I heard. I played the tape and "Let Her Cry" came on and I was sold immediately!! I found "Cracked Rear View" in the bargain basket of a local supermarket and loved every track!! I bought every record from that day to this, including Darius' solo work and I love it all!! I thought I'd long missed the boat in terms of getting to see them live but I caught them on their short "Group Therapy" tour of The UK in 2019, one of the best nights ever!! My one small regret is that on my way back to my car after the show I walked right by their tour bus and saw Mark and Dean just casually chatting to a few fans, I wish I'd stopped just to shake their hands and say thanks for all the pleasure they've brought me over the years. Ah well, I got my ticket and tour poster framed together and up on my wall, I'm happy enough.
Darius Rucker had one of the best voices of the 90s. So incredibly recognizable.
Darius also paid tribute to his late mother by naming his just released sixth country music album "Carolyn's Boy". And if somebody asked me what his best album is, country music or Hootie, "Cracked Rear View" would be my answer.
In 1995, I was a 20-something lead-singer of a Seattle “alternative” club-band & I was burning-out. As I was leaving Seattle, Hootie’s “I only wanna be with you” was getting heavy-rotation on Mtv & knew the “grunge” thing was dead.
What a strange, wild ride! Thank you for this story, this is one of those bands I've always wondered about. 🤔
Saw Darius at Hall's Chophouse in Nashville last weekend. He's doing well in the country music scene. Told I had been a fan since the early 90's. He commented back, "The club days". I said yes, in the Way Back!. He shook my hand and said thanks. So, I guess he did let me "Hold my hand".
My band used to cover Hootie till we lost a guitar player (moved) and drummer (quit) and a guitarist (died). So sad. Good sound, Hootie.
Been to a couple of Hootie Homegrown concerts in Charleston, which the band does to raise money for kids’ school supplies. The crowd would fill that tennis stadium every night and know every word, a big giant singalong. Real loving experience. Darius tells the same stories and everyone still lives hearing them between songs. Great fun, fulfilling.
I used to live in Columbia, South Carolina. I worked on Devine Street which was just up the road from down town where bars were. I saw Hootie for FREE several times right there just down the street from where I worked. This obviously was before they hit it big. So lucky me! ❤️💜💚
I've always enjoyed from the start, Hootie, Creed, Collective Soul, STP, and Pearl Jam good music is simply good music. My ears don't lie.
Gotta absolutely love the role played by David Letterman in this story. 💪👊🎸
Was listening to 'cracked rear view' last week and thinking it still holds up as a great album.
It's wild how different music distribution is these days. Must've been insanely frustrating to rely on record labels like they did
Hootie and the blowfish are up there with my favorite band of all time. I was 14 in the summer of 1994 and to today have quite possibly worn out 4 to 5 cd's of the album. That actually within the first couple years of it coming out. Cracked rear View, is a hell of an album.
I love them. This guys exposes the struggles that they went through, and I am so happy that they are still touring every year. Go Gamecocks.
