"What should we name a device that detects suspicious activity?" SOSUS.
Literally I think your documentaries are better than Netflix ones, which I imagine have way larger budgets. Still you beat them!
"Why are you here?" "Conducting Deep-Ocean mining tests." "What kind of vessel are you?" "A Deep-Ocean mining vessel." Duh what did you expect
The fact that the recovered sailors were given a proper Soviet burial at sea was touching. Sure we were at odds with their country but the sailors were just folks in service of their country just as ours are and have been.
"I wish you all the best" was actually surprisingly heartwarming.
Step 1. Build ship to recover sub Step 2. Recover sub Step 3. Say the recovery wasn't fully successful Step 4. Launch fake 2nd attempt, get caught before putting any real effort into the 2nd attempt Step 5. Issue public statement saying nothing, and enjoy your recovered Soviet sub.
fern (and for us germans simplicisimus) are the best thing you can watch at any time of the day, good amounts of information packed into a simple to understand and properly visualized video. Keep up the good work!
0:27 I love the guy just shrugging as the sub sinks like "what am I gonna do about it" 😂
10:13 this diary entry reads like someone who knows their boss is going to read their diary 😅
My grandfather was contracted to build the claw. Most people on his team didn’t know the purpose of what they were building, but a few people had to be filled in to make sure it would work. The CIA interviewed my grandmother, both sides of the family as well as the neighbors from two different states they had lived in before filling my grandfather in.
Russian submarine: Exists CIA: “Hippity hoppity, your submarine is now my property”
My granddad Bobby Choate was a diver on this operation, as well as operation ivy bells. - He was a submariner that served on the USS Halibut, had amazing stories about his service and his life. Great man 💪
Cool fact: The Glomar Explorer was never used again and sat in a mothball fleet near San Francisco Bay for nearly 50 years before it was sold for scrap and was towed to Korea for dismantling.
You know, fern's use of source tickers in the bottom left is OP AF. Not only do they do epic documentaries, but they are disclosing sources like a legit boss in an almost scientific article fashion. Props. 💯
The fact that they even TRIED to STEAL an entire goddamn submarine is just insane to me. Their level of dedication to get any info out of each other during the cold war was unfathomable. edit: my first top comment😁
These unbelievable stories are only what the public / media have uncovered, imagine what we are still yet to learn. Its almost scary to think about.
There are 2 types of YT video. The ones you watch while eating on 2x speed and the ones you would like to watch in a cinema. This one defines the second type. Great video!
“The location is still classified” = They still will not confirm nor deny it is really there at all & not located in an underwater company lab.
The US was like "we can't confirm or deny our attempt but anyway here are some deceased soldiers that were on that sub"
