Gohan is a reluctant warrior. I understand both sides of wanting Gohan to live his dream and him reaching his full potential. Goku and Vegeta won't be around forever to offer a way out.

I respect that Goku doesn't push Gohan to keep training. He understands that his son isn't like him, even with his potential, and just wants him to he happy. Piccolo is more pragmatic. He knows that someday they won't always have Goku and Vegeta to come in and save the day, so he tries to push Gohan.

For those who don't know or are misconstrued, Gohan did started training again after this, Goku just had no idea. But he finally realized it when they sparred, saying how he didn't know in his search for strong guys to fight, Gohan had been right there with him. Gohan even showed a sign before that with his farewell to future trunks at the end of the black arc. The serious look was his new resolve.
