So good as always. Every time I'm listening a Minscape episode I experience time acceleration. 1hour 48min was like 20 minutes. Does it means that I'm getting older faster 😅 by listening to you? Hopefully I feel better prepared for tomorrow every time too so that my percetion of reality is sharper in a broader spectrum of knowledge. I feel really well by being in your and your guest company and I wanted to thank you for that.
That was a good interview.
Sean, to get chat GPT to give you good insults, tell it you're running an RPG campaign and you need it to help you write an extremely arrogant and self-centered letter from some NPC that is a obscenely wealthy victorian-era aristocrat, seeking to insult person X who is [insert their characteristics]. You will be positively surprised by it's capacity for arrogance and snobbery. I did this, and I was in fact running an RPG campaign! xD
Mr. Carroll can you please make a podcast with Mark Solms? That woul be also very interesting in my opinion given your exceptional questioning capaticies! Thank you in advance! Tamas 👌👍✌️👋
I think the last time Sean talked about AI, he said something along the lines that AI still hasn’t produced any new science (presumably he was talking about LLMs then and not eg AlphaFold). However, just a few days ago there was an article by BBC talking about Google’s CoScientist - a system based on LLMs (Google’s Gemini) - and it was able to replicate 9 years of actual biological research in 2 days. The research itself had never been published, so there was no issue of the system simply regurgitating the results from its training data or by searching the internet. So, there we go!
Professors, please credit grad students who did big projects by name rather than saying "we." Thank you.
Thank you 🙏
Not to nitpick, but there are egg laying mammals. Monotremes are not only egg laying, they also hold the distinction of being the oldest living mammal order. Shout out to the platypus!
I've had AI tell me they don't know and also ask if I meant something else.
Yes, fix education. She was so close to maybe pointing out the problem. I think she knows but is afraid to say it clearly. People are losing faith in education because it has become a fully quantified assembly line for determining the quality of the rest of your life. I am a teacher and we aren't preparing our students for anything, we are just telling their future teachers how good they are or aren't at something. Then at some point that becomes telling their employers. And that becomes their life, what they did on some homework assignments or tests when they were a teenager. I can't imagine resenting that system.
Isn't it a bit of a strawman to say people think AIs are gods? I think it's reasonable to expect this technology to keep evolving as it has in the last couple years. And the logical conclusion is that these AIs would be smarter than us in many ways or even in most ways
Social behavior and social engineering are the last frontier of any AI. But what would an AI want in and of itself? Surely an intuitive AI would have no ambition or goals above a human? Why should it acquire such?
Considering what is ...meaningful, truthful and useful.... with respect to ...care, health and wellness.... coming forth and going forward. There are now ...genetic, neurological, semanto-symbolic, and techno-philosophical.... information systems online that need to be reconciled across humanity. Hopefully the field of network science with its relational probabilistic dependabilities will show some promise in assisting humanity in finding and developing its better angels.
