Thank God !!! Didn't think there were any real human voices still narrating videos these days !! Just found out this is from 14 years ago. No wonder it's a real human voice.

@gravestone4840

The real archeological find is that Blockbuster at 17:32 minutes in.

@Ai-he1dp

Softly spoken English, that was a treat.

@Oathlords

Why can't I meet any women who love this stuff as much as I do? I keep seeing them on TV, lol.

@TimSoden-p6w

One of the greatest gifts during my lifetime is how archeology has advanced and grown with each new revelation or understanding as respect for artifacts and new knowledge aided by technology creates greater knowledge and of course previous opinions or judgements are constantly being revised or changed by minds open to alternative possibilities instead of those fixed by dogma or reputation. The phrase “Only now after two years of research” is fundamental to patient understanding and even this may change over time. Kind regards Tim

@Design_no

This was produced 14 years ago. You need to start putting production dates in the videos.

@peterplotts1238

I see there is also an ancient Blockbuster site there. Isn't the University of Bristol the institution that could no longer bear to fly the flag of Great Britain over its administration building? I don't see how a university department dedicated to recovering and preserving Britain's past can exist comfortably overseen by an administration that demonstrably wishes to erase that past.

@ArmyJay

I wish you’d put some info regarding the date of the first broadcast of each episode. Even just the year would do.

@peoplesrecords2593

Its wild that the Romans were in Britain for 400 years and barely left a genetic imprint! I wonder what percent of Roman soldiers were people from GErmany and France. It's known that they used people from areas they conquered.

@neophyte8284

Those times were much brighter than nowadays.

@jamescarruthers1967

When you have burials that combine Roman and Anglo Saxon styles, how do you know it's an AS burial of people who adopted some Roman material artifacts, and not a Romano British burial of people who adopted some AS cultural practices?

@pamjohnson5363

Wonderful documentary! Great stuff. I do however agree with other comments, please write at least the year the video was put out. Thanks for your great work on all else!

@kevin-jg5nq

My wife and I visited Bamburgh in July. It’s impressive.

@petipeti-q5f

we learned a lot about archaeology and little about the anglo saxons

@johnknowles4131

I do find it interesting that throughout history and English culture we’ve had a reputation for a love of drinking and fighting. Backed up now by archaeological evidence and dental analysis. I’m not saying other cultures haven’t or that it’s anything to be proud of but it’s still the reputation of a large part of English society even now.

It does make you think how different are we really from our ancient ancestors and how much of it is just part of an English/Anglo-Saxon culture? Is it just part of who we are?

Granted they lived in very different and violent times but they had a reputation for it even for their day and now, even in our times, we still have that reputation. Times change and people who behave like that are rightly regarded as drunken thugs but in certain times in history like the world wars that reputation for fighting has served us quite well.

It just make me wonder how much of it is just in our blood and part of just being English? We’ve always had the reputation for it and regardless of which generation you’re from it’s never gone away

8:03 Here comes the 'multiculturalism isn't new' bit.
The Jutes. Angles and Saxons were a multicultural migration to a Britain already homing Picts, Celts, Gaels, Roman-Britons, etc...
What Alice doesn't mention is that all those groups were extremely alike because they all came from a tiny corner of Western Europe.
But keep the argument that medieval Britain was diverse. They make the exact same argument at the beginning of SURBICON to justify a whites only suburbia.

@AnthonyLeighDunstan

What a fantastic doco! Such a fascinating topic! Love it! Might even to a course in this to learn more.

@neilog747

Just a quick note to say that at the very least if you are ethnically English, the Anglo-Saxons are not 'they'. They are 'we'. They are just an earlier version of us.

@GhostofEnoch

One major difference between Britain's ancient multiculturalism and the multiculturalism of today is that it was EUROPEAN!
