That last charizard fight was literally just an anime battle. Kingdra is CLEARLY the better match up (dragon and water type to resist fire) but the Chad Griddy wanted to get his get back at charizard for that 1 HP grudge. Absolute Cinema

I think I can explain what happened to the Rival's alakazam on the second rival battle. Battles have mutliple settings, one for just default level up moves/held items, and one for custom moves/held items. The second rival battle is a custom moves one, so when you changed the abra to an alakazam, the moveset likely didn't change.
