Reagan was a master of the false image
1. He was severely short sighted : he needed help to cross a room, for example when alighting from the Presidential Helicopter he never lost contact with Nancy : it was pretended he never lost contact because of their relationship. 

2. All the TV events such as axing wood were meant to portray him as a tough independent individual to hide the fact he was a visual cripple : he served as a Clerk in WW II. 

3. His blindness meant he paid very close attention to the only cue he had, people's voices : he read emotional vulnerabilities such as patriotism and used it to control.

4. The Democrat party bosses helped him : see "Democrats for Nixon" and how they crushed a powerful opposing candidate in the name of greater business contributions to the party. 

5. Mondale was opposed by Big Oil : they were afraid their profits would be curtailed : Jimmy Carter was in favour of Solar power development. 

Remember how Reagan showed contempt for "Limits to Growth" and ordered the hot water solar on the White House roof be removed, saying the Tax payers can pay for the bill, showing his contempt for the US populous and Government efficiency. 

6. The reason so many people are so angry with him is because he induced a false image in their minds : Reagan made them believe he would act in support and did the opposite. 

For example prior to election he said strong unions are essential to democracy, and sent a letter of support to the Air Traffic Controller union. 

Once elected the crushing of PATCO was a minor step in his play : he ensured the control of relations between businesses and unions was in the hands of people who backed businesses in any way possible. PATCO was merely the public face of his actions, the hidden face was far more damaging and devastating.
