I'd love for Affinity to release their own Lightroom alternative. They do have Affinity Photo, which you can edit Photos in, but a more Lightroom like dedicated program would be amazing.
I paid for the one time lifetime license for Luminar NEO a few years ago. One thing I didn't understand at the time is that although that license entitles me to program updates, it does not give me access to all the "goodies" that the subscribers get. I'd have to pay extra to get them. Although I'm not a fan of that, I also found out that if you subscribe and later decide to unsubscribe, you'll lose access to all those goodies. So, buyer beware!
Its also worth mentioning that most cameras come with raw processing software like olympus workspace
As Fuji user, Capture One is a no brainer to me. I can use just RAW from Fuji and still get the film sinulations with a click of a button in C1. Layers are also super intuitive to use. If I want quick results with Fuji setup, C1 gets it immediately, and if I want to fine tune, the layers and brushes give me perfect control.
In my opinoin it's important to rate the quality of the raw conversion not just the usability and features. Photolab 8 has one of the best denoising engine with DeepPrime XD2, not even Lightroom comes close. The other feature is highlight/shadows recovery. where ON1 has some issues. I don't care too much for usability if the raw processing is garbage.
Very nice. A short video that packs a BUNCH of very useful information and insights. Thanks a bunch for making it.
As someone who's only used the photo editing software built into Windows 10, this was an interesting comparison. I'll have to look into expanding my horizons.
two notes about darktable (using lowercase because I am evil): 1. in the options you can chose different themes, I picked one that's closer to lightroom wasn't a fan of the default gray one either but you can change it 2. the rightmost icon on top of where all the modules are lets you chose presets for which modules to display "beginner" shows only the most important ones makes it a lot less overwhelming when you just started using darktable
Hi Tom. I'd like to know what you think about ACDSee. I've been using it for a bunch of years but have no clue how it compares to the others. Thanks in advance. Cheers!
Since I started using a Fujifilm camera, I transitioned from Lightroom to Capture One and have been using it for six years now. It is remarkable, particularly when working with Sessions instead of Catalogs. It makes organizing projects and saving all the data real easy. Additionally, shooting with tethering is an excellent experience.
Darktable is the most powerful on the planet. Yes the most powerful. It has a steep learning curve but it is for pros and serious hobbyist. The theme can be changed to black or darker grey. But default light grey is best at 18% grey to be able to see and judge colors correctly.
ACDSEE makes a very good one. I've used their top one for over 10 years.
Something to note is the pre render for capture one. This is super useful when I just have to go through thousands of photos quickly because there is no processing time
Nice comparison video on the UI and price of the different tools. It would have been good to know also if you saw any difference in the quality of the algorithms applied by the tools. For example applying the same edits using different products and checking out the results on 2-3 different photos.
Other Photoshop / Lightroom alternatives: - Affinity Photo - ACDSee - Corel PaintShop Pro - Corel Aftershot Pro - NCH PhotoPad - Photoworks - PhotoscapeX - Photo Pos Pro - Ansel Photos - Pixeluvo - Photodemon
I dont care about rating, ai or presets, the main thing that is important is output image quality - consists of detail preservation, noise suppresion, dynamic range preservation, camera profile support, lens correction support. Both Darktable and Rawtherapee are fairly good. And of course old simple Lightroom Classic which still works with single install.
I'm not big on photo editing, but since I spend a lot of time in Linux, I decided to use their editing program and I actually love it. GIMP is surprisingly better than I expected.
lol your humor made me instantly subscribe 😂😂 I appreciate the content too but the humour oof 😂😂
I started with Adobe, then Affinity Photo and Topaz. For the past year, I love ON1 Photo Raw 2025...I have Topaz, but I use ON1 for denoise. ON1 has fantastic masking capabilities: depth masking, luminosity masks, gradient masks, AI based masks. ON1 has AI to quickly get up an editing: AI brillance, AI making and sharpening, AI generative erasing, etc. I like the ability to use layers and the many effect, presets, LUTs,
