My son got me to watch Shin Gojira. We joke that the Gojira scenes are the setup for the more important scenes where meetings happen. My only disappointment with Gojira Minus One was that there were only a couple of large meetings. I've taken to calling American football "Godzillaball", because they all run for four seconds and then have a forty second meeting about where to run for the next four seconds.

My co-workers have been mostly kind to me and I enjoy working in Japan, but by the Twelve the inefficiency drives me insane. They have meetings to decide meetings. Information constantly lost because there's no digital backup. Appearance matters more than actually completing work. I remember once when another teacher asked me how I was able to mark 200+ students' tests in one day. I simply said 'I just marked them.' I then spent the rest of the day revising, which seemed to irk another teacher who asked if I had work to do - to which I responded I had none. She said that was impossible then asked the other teacher who told her I did what was asked of me. She then wanted me to make lesson plans for the following week. I showed her they were already done and she was visibly surprised. Whenever they give me a task to do, I just do it. The concept of efficiency just does not exist I do love this country but I do have regrets sometimes between the inefficiency, shops saying 'Japanese only' and being unable to get a good apartment.

Huh, that wasn't the punchline I was expecting. I was expecting: "Next year: And so one week after the 'Graduation Ceremony' is the 'End-of-School Ceremony', a week after that is the 'Farewell Ceremony', and the week after that is the new 'Graduation and Farewell Ceremony'"

離任式と終業式を一緒にやるところは多いと思うけどね...。うちはそうだった。卒業式も一緒にやるとこもあるらしい。

In India its same we have graduation and farewell separately but what drives me crazy is why the heck we have stand in morning assembly everday under the baking sun.

卒業生と在校生は単純に学校で授業を受ける日数が違うから式は別になる あと自分の通った学校は終業式に離任する先生の挨拶をしていたなあ

Haha experiencing this too. The Japanese parents also appear surprised at the sudden enforced requirement to also have a whole other separate ceremony to 'thank the teachers' at the Hoikusho.

And from what I understand, this is done effectively in the middle of study season, so all the exit and entry events are right next to each other (The whole April start of the school year baffles me for a northern hemisphere country)

I recently moved out of Japan and my visit to the ward office was hilarious. I went there to let them know I'm moving and to cancel my insurance. I told that to one person, who instructed me to another who then did part of the work and instructed me to a third who again did part of it and guided me to a fourth person who finally finished it all. And at every step they took copies of my residency card and some other documents. It went by decently fast and was easy, but for sure it seemed like something a single person could have handled all the way through.
