One moment in the show that lives in my head rent free is the moment they finally get to the house they were supposed to deliver a pizza to and he watches as the customer chews SpongeBob out and sees that hope and energy drain from his face. Squidward may be irritated at seeing SpongeBob happy, but he can’t stand to see him break, to see him fall down into the same pit he himself is stuck in. So he stands up for him, smacking that shitty customer in the face with the pizza, he makes it right. Whenever he sees SpongeBob hurt even if it’s his fault he tries to make it right.

Part of what makes SpongeBob as a cartoon live rent free in peoples minds is just how much "adult" they managed to push into the show without watering down the "child"

Deep down I think Squidward likes Spongebob, or at least appreciates him. Spongebob despite how annoying he is, brings out the fun in Squidward. Spongebob is also like the only person that actually really cares about Squidward and if it weren't for him, Squidward would be even more depressed than he already is.

The sad thing is is that, while squidward was shown to be largely happier in flashbacks BEFORE spongebob joined the krusty krab, (Either before the first episode or before spongebob even moved into the pineapple), it was ALSO shown that he was still largely unsuccessful and STILL worked at the krusty krab. He wouldnt be able to fufill any of his dreams, hed still hate his job, hed hate most of everyone around him given nobody besides maybe his own mother and grandmother would support him. The only difference would be no spongebob, but even then, hed also be losing one of the only other people who unconditionally loved him

Man, I came into this video expecting just seeing how squidward's life would be without spongebob speculating and theorizing about it and came out realizing how sad and deeply relatable squidward's life was. I've always heard people say that when you get older, you start to see how squidward feels like and understand him but this video really explained it in such a way that I could really see and understand, it's crazy how a kids cartoon about an overly happy, energetic sponge could have a character with such a deep and relatable story.

I've never put it into words, but I've always felt Sponge and Squid need each other like Yin and Yang. Spongebob is fantasy and Squidward is reality. We would all love to be as joyful as spongebob, but more often than not we have to be a serious squid. And removing one end will only cause you to go deep off the other end.

I like to believe that Squidward is how he is out of a sort of "natural necessity" As an example, people tend to act certain ways to comprehend and "co-exist" with others.... Its a sort of "instinctual preservation" the mind does to make sure it doesnt get damaged in any way... However there are certain...."conditions" that can be met that break that "preservation" all together, in this case: the need for interaction, the need for joy, and the need to feel contempt. If these needs arnt met, the mind gets desperate and after enough time, click , its over....the mind breaks...and what happens next is whatever comes up first, no more morals, no more pride, ego, hesitation, just the thiught process of...."im feeling ___ so therefore i must do ______"
