@antonleimbach648

This was all about the English stealing trade from the Dutch. It was the Dutch who created the first stock exchange. The Dutch were a Republic when all of Europe was run by wealthy families whose bloodlines were so inbreed they were hemophiliacs.

@MathieuThomassen

The bloke talking at 15:45 mixes facts with nationalism? Line formation was first recorded in history books in 1639 when Maarten Tromp defeated Antonio De Oquendo's Spanish Armada in the front of Calais. Go back to school..

@alphaomega17

Fantastic, owning a model ship makes you wonder about how neat they were, and to think they even engaged in war! Amazing structures

@brianmaphar9685

Nice piece of brits propaganda. I hope the second part is about the raid on the Medway? Where De Ruyter kicked the royal navy on home soil and captured its flagship? And then follows up with the brits asking Willem III (William III) to help out and kick out their monarch and sit on the english throne, alongside Mary?
No englishman has ever set foot on Dutch soil and ruled the country.
Also, no mention of the greatest company the world has ever seen? The VOC. Which in turn was the reason for the Dutch Anglo wars. Yes, you mention trade and them taking the Dutch trade routes, but never mention that it was from the biggest company the world has ever seen. This was during the golden Century for the Dutch republic. And the Oranjes (Oranges) were not monarchs/Royals, but Stadhouders.

@Petje_2000

A video about the Anglo-Dutch wars, without mentioning the raid on the Medway???
Interesting to see the British view on history...

@bcvanrijswijk

Why not mention that Charles II fled to the same Republic, which gave him shelter until he could return to his own country and which he later fought tooth and nail in gratitude?

@DenUitvreter

The British were not one of the great commercial powers of the world. The Dutch merchant fleet in Europe was bigger than than that of the rest of Europe combined and the British couldn't compete against the Dutch with their efficient ships with only minimal guns, industrialized ship building and low interests as the result of them starting modern capitalism.
The British could only compete somewhat in the high risk high reward trade in the Far East and across the Atlantic where their guns mattered more than being efficient, a tiny trade in comparison to the European one because the journey would still take over a year, and another year for the return. The Dutch went out into Asia and the Americas to take the war for independence with Spain and Portugal to their overseas posessions. The Dutch wanted free trade, the British wanted mercantilism and therefore war, so they attacked. It was the Dark Ages nation attacking modernity, both economically and socially. That would only change with the Dutch Republic's invasion of 1688 that brought the British their current constitutional parliamentary monarchy and Bill of Rights.
So, just the usual self aggrandizing British propaganda again.

@rmyikzelf5604

The major difference between what the Dutch did and what the English did, is that the Dutch never aspired to create an empire. Everything was led by business objectives only. The English Crown wanted much more.

@herospeedy3174

There's a movie about michiel de ruyter you can watch its pretty darn good. like an action flick based on true events nothing too overblown. you also get a decent insight into dutch internal politics.

@asscrackish

Nice British propaganda piece... Why not focus on both nations? This is so British focused and leaves a lot of facts out of it. The Dutch were whooping the English in almost all naval battles. At the height of the golden age, The Dutch with its V.O.C. ruled most of the seas and its trading routes. If you do history, do it right!

@hagaCalle

Big ships, you are very pro English!!! Anyhow... Good work.

@WildBillCox13

A well composed docudrama.

@joealp8196

Excellent value all round. And what a lovely performance by Llan Goodman as Pepys.

@crossTempl

Its a rather english view of history

@armored.angels

Wooow found a new good channel ❤

@barry7608

Thanks very interesting.

@Milan74

I just love these documentaries about the age of sail. I play a game called "napoleon: total war" and "empire: total war" just to fight battles on the sea with those ships of the line ;-)

@scottmccrea1873

The Restoration was greatly aided by the fact that Charles II was by nature a mild man. He was seldom vindictive and generally amenable to compromise. Qualities his brother completely lacked. Something Charles himself recgonized.

If Charles had been vindictive, the monarchy might well have failed again.

@rmyikzelf5604

5:30 completely ignoring the fact of the Dutch Republic(!) which defacto was established almost a century before Cromwell, and two centuries before America. But okay. Fine to ignore arguably the first modern nation state.

@DiscoverWorld66

Absolutely thrilling! The strategy and bravery displayed in these naval battles are incredible. Great job bringing this history to life!
