I'm pretty sure Kitasato could get a happy ending to his story if he sold Takehara's dog and used the money to feed himself while he looked for a job. Purebred Shiba Inus probably go for a decent amount. I don't know what the job market in Japan was like when this song came out, but I'd be surprised if he couldn't find work at, say, a fast-food restaurant or a convenience store. It's not being carried off by a princess, but it's not starving to death, either.
