You can see the guys in the first clip have their eyes glued to Gene, even while they're playing themselves! Massive smiles on every one of them as well. I couldn't imagine what it was like to see this man in his element.

Gene, Buddy Rich, Louie Belson. All were masters but I think Gene and Buddy are the inspiration for modern rock drummers.

Everybody compared him to Buddy but they were completely different drummers. Buddy was a technical wizard who will never be duplicated but he wasnโt as great at driving a band. (He would tell you different, of course, but recordings donโt lie). And Gene wasnโt nearly as technical but he had amazing showmanship and he could push the hell out of a band and was renowned as a dance floor favorite.
