The Nuphy doesn't even look retro to me. Looks more fisher price.
My wife got me the nes themed 8bitdo keyboard for Christmas this past year, and I couldn't be happier with it. She had gotten me the best buy exclusive version that comes with the joystick like the c64 one but in the nes color scheme. I must admit I programmed the 2 super buttons and joystick to work in retro arch, played some arcade shootemups for like 15 minutes, thought hey this is cool and then unplugged them and never used them since they just sit on my desk as decorations.
Keeb enthusiast here! For most beginners I’d recommend the bridge 75 or that style of board. Number one way to make a board look retro is put on SA keycaps or a beige set, and put them on a 75% or larger. The prebuilt boards are decent stock but you guys are the type of community that likes to tinker. I’d definitely try out some better switches than gateron reds though, Russ. Seriously there are much better options out there. You’ll like your boards way more.
Russ, you have weird timing. I love your channel and I’m just getting into making a small studio for myself and I’ll be needs keyboard. Weird timing that my new favorite retro game channel has a vid about keyboards 😂 awesome stuff man!
Fun fact, the mini joystick for the 8bitdo Keyboard uses the exact same mechanism as their NeoGeo CD replica pad, and even the tops are interchangeable.
I have had the C64 keyboard ever since I have built my gaming pc last summer. I couldn't be happier with the purchase (currently typing on it). It works out of the box on Linux, it comes with a joystick and 2 extra buttons, battery life is incredible, typing feels suuuuper nice and the looks don't hold back. Considering I paid 85€, I am extremely happy and couldn't recommend more, even to Linux users!
Am I in the market for a new keyboard? No. Not at all. Am I going to watch this as if I have both in my cart and am deliberating which to choose because I can’t get enough of this production value? Yes. Yes, I am.
The Blush switches for the Kick75 aren't a mix of Reds and Silvers - they're silent linear switches, which Nuphy does a poor job of advertising on their product page. The Blush Nano switches are a huge reason why I bought the Kick75 in the first place. The only other prebuilt low-profile keyboard to have the ability to use silent switches were the Lofree Flow Lites, but they didn't offer their Hades switches as a configurable option and asked a whole lot more money for a set of switches.
I use the action buttons on the 8 bit do keyboard as foot switches. Nothing better than editing docs or doing alt attacks all while freeing up your hands
I only get nourishment when Russ reminds me to grab a drink and a snack
The sound of the c64 8bitdo is so satisfying.
I have the C64 keyboard. I love the feel and shape of the key caps as well as the Kaihl Box whites. Instant flashback to the 80s with those. However I did change the switches to Kaihl SIlent Tactile Pros because I live in a share house and the sound was a bit much for close quarters living. The macro keys do not require downloading the software on Windows. They can be programmed with the buttons on the keyboard itself. That was a big plus for me as a linux user
I use the Nuphy Air75 HE and I absolutely love it. Between the build quality and feel, it's awesome. The sound is so good, and the stabilizers all around are very good from factory. The gaming performance is top tier responsive, while still being a delight to type on for day to day usage.
I toss the Keychron Q1 with the round-ish keycaps in the ring. Looks retro and the hall switches feel great, even for one who usually enjoys blue clicky switches. What I am missing the most are keycaps with specific symbols for 8 and 16 bit home computers like Amiga or Atari ST or C64, and matching keycaps in the established emulators.
I'm ultra oldschool for these, having owned an IBM PC back in the late 80s and early 90s. Loving my Unicomp New Model M since the day I bought it. It's just that different a experience from modern style keyboards...
Suggestion: since the huge buttons have a long wire, put them on the floor to use as foot pedals.
I love the C64-inspired one but the lack of an integrated (not separate) numeric pad is a deal breaker for me.
I've just received my kick75 with the nano blush switches and the feel and sound is to die for. I for one love the design of it and it matches the pulsar xlite v2 retro gray mouse perfectly!
Take a look at the keychron keyboards, they have amazing price-quality ratio. I have a 3BITDO and a Keychron, both are lovely.
