Iām dumbfound by the vast amount of people who grew up with Google and still ask these questions
On my team we call this "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas"
As tech support, if restarting it doesnāt work, google is the next step
I work IT support. The amount of people that either don't google their slightess issue or call us to have us do their job, like formatting Word documents, is actually crazy.
I need one for how to tell your boss that your coworker is like this, this was too spot on for a current situation
Whenever I go to IT with an issue, I ALWAYS preface with āIāve restarted my laptop, cleared my cache, connected to the VPN, installed those updates on Monday, and looked for a solution on both google and Redditā before I explain whatās actually wrong. One of the support team actually came down to my floor to hug me the other day, they were so happy I actually troubleshot my issues and told them the results (with screenshots) š
the same should apply to coworkers, not only bosses.
I was the manager of an employee like this. I had so many questions about how they managed to get through college. In my review I gave them an idea, as part of their "personal growth". I wanted them to try researching the answer to their question for at least 15 minutes before asking me. I challenged them a few times when they still came to me, asking them to tell me exactly where they looked and working through with reason where are the most sensible places to find certain kinds of information. They did eventually become more independent, but one day they just stopped coming to work and they were fired for absenteeism. Turns out they started a new job and never told us. They didn't know it was expected that you tell your current employer that you're quitting, even if it's same day. It terrifies me that they drive a car...
I am a manager, and when this happens I ask them back "how would you fix that"? Because if you keep answering their questions they will not experience growth in their careers.
I know a coworker who's getting fired for exactly this. They have a lot of knowledge on a lot of stuff, but asks questions for the bare minimum stuff that a child would know - stuff like how to search for a word within a document, how to reset password, how to restart computer. It was absolutely horrible to try to work with them, i ended up doing twice the work and was asked my managers to 'communicate' with them, except they wouldn't understand anything i say unless i explain it like i would to a baby. Even though they're getting fired now they still have no idea that they're flawed, they just keep thinking they know best
I've been a manager & this is so real, like bro, did you even try to troubleshoot the problem before distracting me from my work that needs to get done?
But if google doesnt have the answer its also important to NOT GUESS THE SOLUTION YOURSELF WITHOUT CONSULTING SOMEONE ELSE FIRST AND TAKE IT AS THE CORRECT ONE. Maybe its because i work in conservative asia, but I've gotten in trouble and seen people get in trouble more for being "too scared to ask" and just doing things with their own logic without double checking first and fucking up monumentally. Had a coworker that everyone hated who always did this and we end up having to clean up her mess while she insisted things were "already like this when i got the files"
this sketch is actually hilarious bc i feel like the opposite is more common. older bosses who donāt know shit about technology constantly asking for help with basic shit
I wish I could show this video to my clueless team member lol š
I definitley have this tendancy. But knowing I have this tendancy is the best way around it. Basically if its not a high speed deadline I need to meet, I just need to hold myself back for a moment and I usually get there.
In computer science, we have an acronym for that: RTFM, or āread the friendly manualā. When youāre frustrated with someone for not doing it and itās an informal enough setting, that F stands for something else.
Yay! Being insecure about asking questions might pay off for once lol
Is this really something large amounts of people are struggling with???? Iām with the boss: this lack of basic self-sufficiency in a world where we can find out anything extremely quickly would have me firing this person too . . . This isnāt an unspoken rule at work itās a rule of life and if you donāt have the wherewithal to figure something simple out then you need a job that doesnāt use whatever incredible lack of intellect or just common sense you exhibit This person should never have been hired in the first place
This applies to people who may not be working jobs too like students or social circles. Being lazy to google is not an excuse. Asking for help is not shameful, but trying first is right.
