5k would not even pay the birthing bill

@afreaknamedallie1707

Literally 5k won't even cover the cost of giving uncomplicated birth with insurance. What the hell is that policy.

@KLH-98

The average US birth costs $10,000. So, there’s that

@jordanmcgrory2171

"A desperate worker is a cheap worker" is what these policies are when you boil them down.

@anastasia.657

As a Russian let me say: he takes more and more pages from Putin's handbook. Including baby bonus. Except in Russia baby bonus is 8200 dollars. Which is A LOT more if you factor in that life here is cheaper and we already have a paid maternity leave. 5 grand for the US is laughable.

@melissarecord7102

The state of Utah gave me a $100 tax credit in 2009 for being a stay at home parent for a child under the age of one. It was deeply insulting because the reality is I gave up way more than that to do what I did. I spent it all on yarn.

@nokswift

One time payment of 5000...... that's such a joke

@choi1061984

When the USA can give me 1 year of maturnity leave, have a daycare at my job and then have a good public school my kid can walk to without feeling the fear of getting possibly shot in class at maybe we can start talking.

@julesbilee

said this in a reply but they’ve also tried this in other countries like Japan and Korea (which also famously have their own misogyny problems) and it’s not working either. Yet they will do anything but treat women better (and by treat I also include policies, social programs, etc not just general attitudes and vibes).

@nw1317

Right?! 5k to pop out entire human beings who cost more than a house for their early lifetime is not remotely a motivation

@michellejarvis7878

The US is the only developed country which does not have nationally mandated maternity leave. One in four women in the US has to return to work two weeks after giving birth.

@cece121234

It's funny that all this pressure is put on women. Last I checked, women cannot biologically have kids by themselves, unless we're advocating for sperm banks. And practically, women cant raise kids by themselves, they need the village. Supportive partners, extended family, neighbors, friends, etc. But no one is talking about this. Grandparents are working well into old age and have no time to help out. Male partners dont always step up and there is no sense of community in many places. Not to mention the financial difficulties and maternal health risks. No wonder women are opting out. I think most men are opting out too.

@kawaiiperson

"have babies now, we'll fix society later" feels like Lucy tricking Charlie Brown with the football

@eklectiktoni

Would they give it to women adopting too? Or is it only for people who birth children? Because society's tendency to devalue people who adopt is a just another layer to this whole having children discussion.

@tabithawarren

My friend's dad offered her $100k to have a kid because he wanted a grandchild. She said no. Who would take $5k? That's nuts!

@parzivallampruge2549

$5k is a drop that would evaporate before even reaching the bottom of the child care cost bucket.

@tinkergnomad

$5k for eighteen plus years of free labor, and more money than I could calculate is genuinely the most insulting thing I've ever heard.

@LylaKittn

$5k wouldn’t even buy the stuff that comes in the free baby boxes Norway gives to the parents of every newborn regardless of socioeconomic status. The box itself can be used as a bassinet, each year every box is the same - unisex onesies, booties, caps, blanket, etc…diapers…if you’ve never heard of this there are loads of unboxing videos. It’s astounding how horribly we’re treated in America by the government.

@beccaleigh7744

"When you have a child, the world has a hostage."

@lischa31

This is such an important message. Women, know your power.
