@UNUSUALUSERNAME220

Oh man! Those guys jumping off the side that's going under first, can't see it coming! When that super-structure rolls over, it's just gonna flatten those poor souls in the water What a way to go! RIP guys!

@cjmanson5692

If I recall, the fact that the Szent István, a battleship, was sunk by a tiny torpedo boat sent shockwaves throughout the world's naval powers (i.e. Britain, Germany, France, America, and even Japan) because they realized that inexpensive torpedo boats could easily sink ships that cost the Earth.

@Sukainuu

Thank you for your work, it is important to keep these parts of history alive. It makes this footage more easier for future generations to connect to what is being shown.

@danielkussmaier3736

I was mowing the lawn at an elderly couple in Austria and I saw a picture, habd drawn oh that ship. I asked the woman who is in her 80s what that ship is, and she told me that her father was on it while is sunk, but he survived, and he made the drawing. That was last year.

@robertdickson9319

I've seen this footage multiple times and it never ceases to amaze me that there is little sense of urgency in abandoning the ship - there are no cutters or boats either from the Istvan or its escorts close by to help rescue men, life jackets seem to be few & far between - just a general malaise about the whole situation.

@TheRealBaronA

89 sailors
At 6:12 am, with the pumps unequal to the task, Szent István capsized off Premuda. 89 sailors and officers died in the sinking, 41 of them from Hungary. R.I.P

@conservative-ku3lz

Andy Geary, Incredible is an understatement. So many thoughts and empathy running through me during this coloured clip.

@robbieross6646

Oh, the humanity. Beautiful, innocent young men, dead for nothing. A sad story the world keeps repeating even to this day.

@tancreddehauteville764

Apparently 'only' 89 sailors lost their lives in the sinking. Given the ability of the sailors in swimming, and the relatively warm waters, most survived.

@nerdypetee

1 of the most replayed film from WWI, those 12 x 12 inch guns are powerless against a tiny torpedo boat.

@FS-my4wv

Watching this ship sink reminds me of Hemingway's comment about going broke, "happens slowly, and then all at once."

@thomaswoll-vj1vf

Faszinierend, wie diese kostbaren alten Aufnahmen erhalten und sogar restauriert und aufgefrischt werden.

@suspiciousminds1750

Incredible footage. Well done! The footage at the end of sailors being hauled into lifeboats looks like it was taken yesterday.

@shivadizayin

This gives you the chills. You can hear the ship’s haunting body as it turns 1:30
What a waste of young life.
Thanks for the restoration. It really it amazing work.

@the_phaistos_disk_solution

The most important video collection in it's category. Take these words seriously.

@dillonventola408

Absolutely nuts

@fredericksaxton3991

Added sound effects were really quite good.

@robpatrick6107

That is an amazing and tragic bit of footage. Beautifully restored

@sse_weston4138

I remember there are two camera angles of this sinking. One, seen here, and another from a very similar angle, slightly higher up and records the few seconds prior to the cut as the battleship capsizes. Both angles cut mid capsize, but each capture different intervals of the capsizing, enough that you can get the full thing.

Found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG-8Mc9Y_Gc
It shows both angles (unfortunately the film is mirrored). The other angle is in the second half, and you can definitely see snippets of this second camera angle (featuring a crane or derrick of some kind) in the shot, but never the full thing with the capsizing almost complete before cutting.

@jkconner9636

Incredible to watch this now, over 100 years later
