I've been struggling as a Jr PM when I was moved to a PM role that was open. I am very aware of my lack of technical/domain expertise but I'm good at design and couldn't figure out what was not clicking, leadership is also very uptight and anxious since we have a working product that needs to scale. Seems I'm a crafter and a bit of growth PM. I can clearly identify my coworker who is an engineer with domain expertise turned PM and he adds so much value.

So accurately categorized all types of PMs. I am more of a generalist and I think I can do a lot of things mentioned, but don’t think I can ever be a domain expert. I think also having been a consultant before, I love to strategize, and hate doing the nitty gritty work like writing user stories, etc. Could you please touch upon how to get into managing people?  How would you talk to your manager about getting an opportunity like this?

Very useful framing. The one issue is that near a certain level like Director in FANG, leading teams becomes really important to progress or to transfer. As a L7/L8 ic you will have difficulty to move out of your company without management experience.
