Good Grief. This isn't Dumbledore. The author doesn't seem to know the characters' motivations. Dumbledore does not lie to students. The student may misunderstand, but Dumbledore does not tell straight lies to students. Dumbledore would not tolerate Snape for launching dark curses at a student. Dumbledore has cursed other teachers for less. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 27, titled “The Centaur and the Sneak.” In this chapter, Professor Dolores Umbridge aggressively grabs and shakes Marietta Edgecombe, a student who had just betrayed Dumbledore's Army. Dumbledore intervenes immediately, raising his wand, and Umbridge recoils as if burned. He then states, “I cannot allow you to manhandle my students, Dolores,” said Dumbledore, and for the first time, he looked angry.
