It's never too late to find out how easy it is to mod your 3DS!
As a fan of both retro gaming and emulation, this video is a lovely treat. Realistically we live in a time when it's very easy for many games of the past to be played. Whether it's legit or not is up to the individual. I thought it worth pointing out that just like those gaming companies. One day the original technology of older consoles will be no more. Sure replicas can be made but one day you won't be able to buy an original NES, etc. So it's wonderful that modding and emulation will let us continue to experience the classics. Like how I can play ps1 games on the go with my vita without needing to have my ps1 plugged in. I truly hope preservation with gaming makes a breakthrough someday, but it's channels like your that make me hope more people catch on. Keep up the amazing work.
Remember, if it weren't for illegal bootlegs, movies like Nosferatu would have been lost to history. Every copy of that super iconic and very important historical movie were ordered yo be destroyed. Legality be damned, preservation will always exist.
1:43 "Doesent changeing the console go against that principal?" Yes! But thats why you emulate on a PC, Mini PC, or PC handhelds like Rog Ally etc. Good video btw.
Video games so far is the hardest medium to preserve.
I go to stores that sell those old games and I have amassed a collection, so I can play them whenever I want on the original hardware. I also still buy newer games.
A partial cause of "physical games" just being download codes in a box now is that AAA devs apparently can't optimize anymore. Even a UHD Disc can only hold 100gb max, which most AAA games long have exceeded. One of the last Games to come out with actual Discs was GTA 5 on PC which consisted of 7 seperate install discs.
I remember going into a game store when I was in college and asking for a copy of FFVII and the guy in the store just told me to go play it on an emulator. I had been looking for it for a while, so it took the wind out of my sails and that was that.
Great video! We all need a serious discussion about preserving the cultural legacy of video games going forward.
1:10 im a friend who cant get enough of it!
Awesome :3 tbh I do prefer having the physical copies of games. I do emulate quite a bit though but it's mostly cause I can't afford it. Would love to own more physical though
Love me PC emulation. Love me emulation handhelds. Got an RG Nano, an RG 28xx, and an RP5.
What makes the whole situation surrounding the VGHF and the copyright office even more pathetic is the fact that the VGHF plea was rejected even though they were not even advocating for public access to game archives, but simply advocating for access to the archives of older retro games specifically for researchers and students learning about game design (So controlled access effectively). So the stand that the copyright office made is against the easy access for the use of older games for educational purposes. I swear ether the USA copyright office was bribed by the ESA or must be ran by the biggest clowns on the planet.
I wish companies would give us full control over game files, current game files. You can move and copy game files from Steam but every time you start a game up you have to go through the Steam launcher. There are special programs that allow you to copy games to other devices like retro handhelds(Anbernic, Pow kiddy, Trimui etc.), Psvita, 3DS and probably others. Imagine being able to have full control over roms. You put a flash drive in a PS5 and then plugging that flash drive into a pc and copying it or emulating it or whatever.
Great video and so true!
Thanks for the balanced view on GOG. Too many people are acting like they're perfect lately. Steam or GOG, you should be keeping backups of games you care about around, and if you are making backups, they're not that different, other than some games from Steam needing to be cracked to be playable outside of Steam. People will get screwed over if either one of them shuts down and they weren't prepared.
fellow librarian here!! we still have a wii and some games for it, but god I wish I could set up collections for older games or figure out how to get some emulators working for our teens, but thats just not the focus of our library
Pax is the best was to experience these games as well as get some streetpass tags
If not for emulation and ROM sites, games like the Ps1 and PS2 Gundam games such as Zeonic Front and Battle Assault 2 would be lost to time, as Bamco has shown no interest in re-releasing them.
