The “My Girl” gag got me good! Amazing tones and songs here. I love that you guys manage to make this just as much fun as your videos about funk, Primus, or anything else. Carry on, djentlemen!
This is one of the most satisfying bass videos I’ve ever seen. 🤣
I’m such a bass nerd. I don’t even like this genera of music but I thoroughly enjoyed this video just for the sake of hearing what talented bass wizards are up too.
I would say Simon Grove should get a nickname like “Simon Groove” All of these bass players are a true inspiration for me and I feel so encouraged to keep learning from them, thanks for this amazing video Scott and Ian, I’ve learned many thing from you guys as well 👽💪🏻
My favorite bassist is Misa from the Japanese rock band, Band Maid. She can flip from pick to slap or finger style and back flawlessly. I’ve never seen anyone do it like her. Her tone is massive too. She went from playing Orange AD 200 MKIII or a 4 stroke-300 to an Ampeg SVT Classic. Her main bass is a 5 string Black Cloud custom bass (she also plays fender jazz and G&L). In 2024 she said she used a Darkglass Microtube B7K Ultra on the latest album and for the slap parts she used a Tronographic’s Rusty Box and re-amped everything through an Aguilar which is part of her normal rig. If you want to see phenomenal bass playing AND hear a massive bass tone. She’s your gal. Another bassist I’m surprised wasn’t on this list is Eugene Kostyuk of the Ukrainian metal band Jinjer. They’re djenty enough and his finger style and tapping are top tier in my opinion. And his choice of notes, how he phrases things. He has a lot of bass playthrough’s on IG of just him and the bass. It’s good stuff.
I remember when I was a kid and a beginner at guitar, I came up with the hybrid picking technique. I think I even called it hybrid. I just could never play the technique well. Fast forward about a week after I came up with the concept, I was on Youtube at the public library looking at videos and came across someone doing the technique and was blown away. I was kind of bummed that the technique already existed, but floored at the possibilities it opens up as a musician. 25+ years later, still can't hybrid pick to save my life, but I think i'll give another go at practice with it once I get my bass and guitar repaired next week.
Why did they not get a dingwall. The berg scale length isn't even close to long enough.
As a long time guitarist, who also plays bass, with all due respect, it trips me out how many bass players are in awe of pick players and how they use the pick lol. I feel like all bass players should have played guitar first, it's so easy lol, yet I watch guys struggle. So, I'm blessed, but, nobody knows me so who cares lololol, I'm in awe of the jazzy stuff you guys can finger, the scales you guys can lead through so easily.
I love your vibe I enjoyed this more than I expected ahaha
Ian, you are correct about the djent word referring to the sound of the guitar. It's prog metal, but it somehow djent became a subgenre. It used to drive Misha Mansoor crazy. LOL. I believe Nolly made the Dingwald/darkglass sound popular. Don't know if he created that sound, but he was the first that I saw play Dingwalds.
5:54 "is it hard playing with this tone?" not 10 seconds later: plays a really sick riff
Thanks guys another great video ! Some wicked playing going on ! House subsidence insurance questionnaires will now include a 'Djent bass player resident inclusion clause' !
Insane death machine has done a bass cover of cafo and its mind blowing
At 10:50, the Djent-tations. Sorry. Someone had to say it. Great vid lads!!
I’m not a big Nolly fan, but you gotta give the guy his flowers. He’s a player
When I first heard of djent, everyone was just making fun of the chugging. It's absolutely insane to see what it is now.
Have you guys featured Killian Duarte at all? That man is a hidden titan of bass.
Can I ask the question… when you say a thin pick, what gauge would you recommend? Been playing bass off and on for collectively for maybe 8 years but must admit I am not proud of my progression. But I did sign up for the course! Love the content dudes. Side note, I’ve never ever played my bass with a pick 😅
I always thought it as from the low chug sound. Djent djent djent
