Ian McDiarmid totally nails this as the scheming yet oddly likeable and seductive Sith Lord...he has really added depth to what was meant to be the antagonist from a single movie...
Palpatine’s manipulative nature is truly terrifying. You can tell he’s been planning this moment for YEARS. And he executed it perfectly.
Mace Windu: I sense a plot to destroy the Jedi. Yeah, you noticed like 3 years too late.
Love how Palpatine is just chillin looking at the death Star plans and anakin doesn't even bat an eye
"Don't continue to be a pawn of the Jedi council. Be a pawn of the Dark Side."
Anakin: “You’re the Sith lord!” Palpatine: “Well it’s about time you figured that out! I’ve been dropping hints like crazy!”
I love how his Sidious ROTJ voice becomes more and more apparent throughout the scene.
I can see why Anakin turned. Palpatine is almost like a father figure to him at this point. He was consoling his grievances towards the Jedi and slowly turning him against them. He's brilliant
I once met Ian McDiarmid in my home town when he was doing a performance at the national theatre. Spoke to him about his role as Palpatine. Awesome awesome guy !
That smile after he says “save your wife from certain death“ is honestly fucking spine chilling.
2:22. He's been planning meticulously for this moment for years at this point. He knows the time is ripe to drop this bomb, and you can see the satisfaction and thrill he's feeling. He's playing a very dangerous game, making a massive gamble, but he has taken infinite pains to control all the variables. McDiarmid absolutely NAILS this character.
"Use my knowledge! I beg you!"
2:18 love how he says "the nature of the dark side", then holds his mouth open as if hes in awe of it, which he is. Its ominous as hell, i love this scene.
How this man didn't even get a Oscar nomination for playing such an amazing villain is criminal
Sidious is so well written.. The level of manipulation and reasoning he uses here is so compelling that the dark side genuinely sounds worthwhile and fulfilling
This scene alone is better than all the sequels combined
Palpatine: Know the power of the dark side. The power to save Padmé. Anakin: Keep my wife’s name, out your FUCKIN MOUTH!
3:50, that is acting. The subtle shift in the voice is brilliance. Even the shape of his lips change when his real sith voice comes out.
Ian McDiarmid is so talented. You know how much fun he had playing this role. Palpatine is such a well written character and it required a fantastic actor. Ian fit it perfectly.
