This is great news about the mechanical shutter. I notice LED artifacts and light cycling even in my R3 when in electronic shutter at some locations that I shoot. Having the option for mechanical shutter is a lifesaver in some of those super screwy lighting locations. Glad to hear the R5 Mark II will keep the mechanical shutter.
I still use the R5 as my main portrait camera and will for many more years. The images that come from this sensor are fantastic.
As a completely amateur hobby camera user I still don’t think I’ve maximized my use of the R5 I bought 4 years ago. I kind of see no point in upgrading. I’ll probably wait another five or six years for the next body upgrade. I went from a 6d to the R5 and am amazed by its abilities. Recently used it at the Fort Lauderdale Airshow and it didn’t disappoint.
You should mix up the content of your videos. Unfortunately, we keep hearing the same speculations over and over again.
Not getting my hopes up or down. The one thing we DEFINITELY know about the R5ii is that we don't have a clue. Not really.
Better be correct....no more "rumors". Just the facts.
I'm waiting and wanting Canon to come out and say Canon R5MKII is ready for purchase. I will be getting one asap. My question is this. I brought the Canon R when it came out and R5 when it came out. I never change the Mechanical or 1st curtain or Electronic shutter. Whatever the base was that is what I shot. Now, I normally shoot weddings, senior and regular portraits. What should my settings be? Mechanical, 1st curtain or electronic?
As others have stated, the approx 30% improvement in scan rate / rolling shutter is compared with the R3, not R5. This would mean a sensor scan rate of roughly 230fps (so likely still slower than the Z8 with 270fps) and possibly the reason it needs a mechanical shutter - essentially to have an appropriate flash sync.
Good perspective on getting the most cost effective camera for business. Not necessarily the latestest. For me I still do want a better AF for those 1 in life time moments - weddings and events and especially during backlight scenes when using flash. Thank you for reminding us. That 1000 in the pocket can really help out for a new lens.
The r5 has some great features. I agree, the best question you should ask is if your business has changed drastically to warrant an update. I like the features of the R5, but the r5mkii isn't on my list. I still like the R3...Good Video
Minor correction.. CR report is 30% better rolling shutter than the R3 not R5 as you state.
I guess it will be a faster stacked sensor as we would expect but apparently it’s not fast enough to do away with the mechanical shutter. It will be interesting to see how images of things like hummingbird wings and propeller blades and similar fast moving objects will look when shot with the electronic shutter.
The "right angles" comment is surely a hint to the "Right-Angle Tiltable EVF" patent they made mentioned on Canon Rumours on 16th May
I bought the R6ii recently and realy like it. Only thing i miss is the MP, should not crop my images. Doubted for the R5 but went for the pre-shoot. Think i will get the R5ii and will keep the R6ii as a backup/2nd camera
That's good news... no mechanical shutter for R5 II would've been a deal-breaker for me as electronic shutter on my current R5 won't do auto exp bracketing or the long exposures I need for night photography. Also, the sun star artifacts with electronic shutter are annoying...
Canon is making a fool of itself with these specifications. I hope there will be more. And if there is no full HDMI connection again, then the disappointment will be huge
Excellent to the point update
I believe the right angles may refer to the screen. The R5 wasn't quite square when the screen was flipped out. I guess we will see.
If the design is similar to the Hasselblad X2d that would be AMAZING
